High-Performance Cylinder Lighting for a 21st-Century Library Hub

A glimpse into how Meteor's Vela cylinders helped illuminate one of the largest library systems in the United States.

High-Performance Cylinder Lighting for a 21st-Century Library Hub

The Mid-Continent Public Libraries serves over 780,000 people across three Missouri counties and is one of the largest United States library systems.

The new and renovated branches are designed to embody the future of libraries as community hubs. Designed by SAPP Design Architects, Helix Architecture + Design, and supported by True Engineering, the 33,500 sq. ft. Colbern Road Library Center reflects MCPL’s vision for a more flexible and future-facing library experience.

Beyond traditional library functions, the branch serves as the headquarters for MCPL’s Small Business Division, supporting entrepreneurs through free services, educational courses, and community resources.

Across the 3 branches, 231 Vela 6 Meteor luminaires were specified in varying wattages, delivering outputs from 4,500 to 9,200 lumens. The fixtures provide broad, softly diffused illumination that supports visual comfort across reading areas, collaborative work zones, children’s spaces, and general public areas.

With its clean cylindrical form and high-output performance, Vela 6 helps create a cohesive lighting language throughout the branch. Its wide distribution and soft visual quality allow the library to feel open, comfortable, and welcoming while still meeting the illumination demands of a large public environment.
